Description

This building dates from 1893 and was built originally by the Liberal Party as the Wigan Reform Club. A competition was held to choose the design and architect for the building and the 2nd place design by Heaton and Ralph was the one which was eventually constructed. Designed in a rich Flemish Renaissance style of architecture the building is a prominent feature within the streetscape along King Street West.

THE NEW REFORM CLUB.—We understand the contract for the above has been let to Messrs. Wilson and Son, builders, of this town, their tender being about £3.700. The building, which will be situated in King Street West, will be commenced at once, under the superintendence of the architects. Messrs. Heaton and Ralph. It will be a fine block of buildings. In the basement there will be a restaurant bar, smoke room, and cellars; on the ground floor two shops, officer, registration office, etc; 1st floor, billiard room, Smoke room, large dining and assembly room, bar, small private room,etc.; the 2nd floor, large billiard room, smoke room, and caretaker's rooms. We understand that Mrs. W. Woods will shortly lay the foundation stone.
