Description

The cottage stands on Almond Brook Road.  The original building was a thatched cottage and was used as a small farmhouse.  It burned down in 1901 and was rebuilt.  The cat silhouettes were on the original cottage as well, and gave the cottage, and the nearby farmhouse their name.  It was most likely a dairyman’s symbol advertising milk for sale.  There is a local story though that it originated from cat statues being placed in windows to let people know a Catholic priest was in the area or a mass was to be said.  This was at a time when  Catholicism was being suppressed and Standish remained a Catholic stronghold.
