St George's Church Wigan was built 250 years ago to support the growing industrial population of Wigan in Lancashire. It has seen many ups and downs. In the 1930s my father was Vicar between 1931 and 1936 and he undertook the re-modelling and modernising of the Church to serve its large and growing congregation. Sadly this work was damaged by an extensive fire in the 1980s, but the Church was imaginatively restored, only to find that the 21st Century the local urban population had been displaced by ring-roads and commercial development. In consequence, its congregation declined, and the Church now serves primarily as a shelter for the homeless.
